Cute But Deadly – Icelandic Death Frog

This little guy may only be one inch long and weighs only 3 grams but before his poison sac was removed he killed four entire families (129 people) in the mountains of Iceland.  From birth these little creatures have enough venom in one bite to kill four humans.  They have a small needle sharp injector under their tongue and death comes in under 30 seconds through complete paralysis of the nervous system (more details below).

There are only 20 recorded sightings of this ultra-rare animal and it is rumored the  monks in the period of AD 870-930 used these frogs to kill off 1,000’s of Norsemen.

They have a distinctive defensive display in which the body is lifted up into an erect position, the first pair of legs are lifted high , while the entire frog  sways from side to side with hind legs in a cocked position.

Its venom contains a potent neurotoxin, known as PhTx3, which acts as a broad-spectrum calcium channel blocker that inhibits glutamate release, calcium uptake and also glutamate uptake in neural synapses. At deadly concentrations, this neurotoxin causes loss of muscle control and breathing problems, resulting in paralysis and eventual asphyxiation, usually in under a minute.  In addition, the venom causes intense pain and inflammation following a bite due to an excitatory effect the venom has on the serotonin 5-HT4 receptors of sensory nerves. This sensory nerve stimulation causes a release of neuropeptides such as substance P which triggers inflammation and pain.

You are a Bad Tweeter!

A Malaysia man has agreed to tweet an apology 100 times over three days after slandering a publishing company on the social media service.

Fahmi Fadzil (@fahmi_fadzil), who describes himself as a performer and writer on his Twitter bio, is doling out the contrite tweets at about one an hour. As of Thursday morning, he was at 25.

The apology, which Fadzil told QMI Agency was the result of “an out-of-court settlement, mutually agreed by both parties,” reads: “I’ve DEFAMED Blu Inc Media & Female Magazine. My tweets on their HR Policies are untrue. I retract those words & hereby apologize.”

The unusual penalty comes as a result of a tweet he wrote in January claiming a friend of his had been treated poorly by her employer, publisher BluInc Media.

As reported by the Associated Press, Fadzil tweeted an apology shortly afterward, but the company’s lawyers sent him a letter and began legal proceedings.

Twitter is increasingly being cited in contentious cases between companies and employees, as Sportsnet host Damian Goddard discovered when he was fired over one of his tweets in May.

Fadzil has more than 4,500 followers and seems to be enjoying his new-found fame, cheerily replying to questions and suggesting curious tweeters do a Google News search on him. He hosts The Fairly Current Show – a Malaysian current affairs program on the web.

According to a tweet he posted Thursday, he expects to post his last apology around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Chavez Might Be Crazy!

Any on the topic of very strange quotes comes one from Hugo!

“I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

Chavez, who also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world’s problems, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up.

“Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts,” Chavez said, sipping from a glass of water.  At least he is smart enough to be willing to admit there might be life on other planet?
